Like most normal little girls her age – Ella LOVES School, LOVES jumping on her trampoline and LOVES playing on the swings with her older sister.
But it wasn’t always that way!
Ella was born in Auckland in 2004 with Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome, meaning she has the tiniest piece of chromosome missing – which can cause OVER 200 abnormalities.
Ella has a series of complex heart problems, and suffered a stroke during her first surgery at just 5 days old (being 5 weeks premature and 2.13kg).
Ella spent the first 7 weeks of her life in a CRITICAL condition in Intensive Care.
During those gruelling 7 weeks, we didn’t know if Ella would live or die.
Due to her stroke, Neurologists speculated that she’d lose the movement down the left side of her body.
As parents we were devastated, but like many parents we were determined not to let this interfere in the life our beautiful daughter could lead.
Ella’s first years of life consisted of hospital and home – home, hospital, home, hospital home…. Conventional medicine, as good as it is, couldn’t completely improve Ella’s standard of life, so her future looked bleak.
Ella seemed to be destined to a future of being different, disabled, and battling a life of constant hardship.
And every day I kept thinking there has to be something else, something to help. After what seemed like an eternity of hospital visits and battles, I decided to take things into my own hands and began a relentless search for something to help Ella.
I trawled medical information, looked overseas for answers, and investigated a number of ‘out there’ alternatives.
But there was one option that I kept coming across. A solution that hospitals in the UK and US were using with great effect on a range of conditions – Reiki
I discovered that Reiki is an ancient Japanese art of listening to the body and allowing the body to repair itself.
By helping Ella listen to her own body and for her body to respond to energy variances I knew I had a tool that we could use for now and for the future.
So we gave it a shot.
I attended some sessions on Reiki and learnt some of the basic techniques. I practiced on myself and then Ella and I had a session.
We didn’t stop any of the conventional medication, we simply added an alternative that didn’t involve anyone man-handling Ella – shoving needles into her or trying to shove more food down a tube.
And here’s what happened!
Ella rejected ‘it’.
Although she didn’t know what ‘it’ was, she could FEEL something changing so she’d push ‘it’ away by waving her hands at me. Even though I wasn’t actually touching her, she could feel things happening inside her body.
OMG I panicked – this I was sure, was the solution for Ella. But she was going to fight me.
But you know us mums, we’re like tigers – I re-focused and undeterred, I carried on.
It took over 6 months of perseverance before Ella came to me one day and asked for “Mummy hands”. She’d been feeling particularly miserable that day and in pain.
Within 5 MINUTES, Ella was off and onto her next adventure.
The benefits seemed to roll in for Ella after that
Sleeping through the night, as opposed to waking on the hour in pain, and coughing because of her inability to swallow properly
Although still requiring surgery, our ‘emergency’ trips to hospital are zero
Ella is happier. She still has battles and hurdles to face, but knowing that we have a tool that is a positive experience and helps Ella reduce the pain, stress and apprehension means that we face them with renewed energy.
Ella’s story is like many of the children and parents I now work with. I went on to study to get my certification that allows me to work with others as I have worked with Ella to help relieve
- Stress
- Depression
- Pain
